FIRE ALARM SYSTEM MONITORING, 24 HOURS A DAY

A fire alarm system warns personnel to evacuate a building because of danger.  It is not necessarily connected to a central station monitoring service, but indeed can be for greater protection of your property 24 hours a day.  In the event of a fire, a "monitored" system sends out a signal to the central station monitoring service, resulting in a call to your local fire department and/or anyone you have listed with the monitoring service.

FIRE ALARM SYSTEM SERVICE: Inspection, testing and maintenance

To ensure their reliability, fire alarm systems must be inspected, tested and maintained in accordance with the requirements of NFPA 72 and your local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).  Cofessco Fire Protection will perform a program of periodic testing, inspection, and maintenance that is right for you and that conforms to all NFPA code requirements as well as the requirements of your local AHJ and the system manufacturer’s suggested inspection and maintenance requirements.

Here is a list of items and procedures included in an annual fire alarm inspection in accordance with NFPA 72:

  • Inspect control panel
  • Verify monitoring connection
  • Inspect annunciator
  • Test pull stations
  • Test bells
  • Test audible / visual devices
  • Test elevator recall
  • Test door holders
  • Test smoke detector sensitivity every two years
  • Test duct detectors
  • Thermal detectors
  • Test tamper switches
  • Test flow switches
  • Test ground fault detection circuitry
  • Tested for grounded field wiring
  • Battery standby verified

Definitions:

Inspection
A visual examination of a fire alarm system, or a portion thereof, to verify that it appears to be in operating condition and is free of physical damage.

Inspection of your fire alarm system involves regular visual examination, activation and documentation of all devices (panels, detectors, pull stations, horns, strobes, annunciators, door holders, etc.) in your system.

Testing
A procedure to determine the functional status of a system.  These fire alarm system tests follow up on the original acceptance test at intervals specified in the appropriate chapter of the NFPA Standard 72.  Testing of your fire alarm system includes annual procedures to determine that the system operates as designed, including a test of monitoring connections.  Sensitivity testing of every smoke detector in your system is required every two years.

Maintenance
Work performed to keep equipment operable or make repairs.  Maintenance of your fire alarm system involves regular replacement of the 24-hour backup batteries.
